D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity Features Top Two-Year Olds and Lots of History

(Opelousas, La.) – The top 2-year old thoroughbred colts, geldings and fillies will be racing in two divisions for a purse of $100,000 each. The pair of $100,000-added 2-year-old events stands alone on the evening of July 28 as part of a retooled stakes schedule.

“We moved them back a few weeks to give horsemen a little more time to get their 2-year-olds ready,” said Evangeline racing secretary Coleman Lloyd. “In years past, when the Jean Lafitte at Delta was still run early in the year and some other races for 2-year-olds were in the spring, everybody had their babies ready early. Nowadays it seems, everyone is waiting longer and longer.”

The “Shine,” formerly run as both the Cajun Futurity and the Southwest Futurity, has been held every year during the history of racing at Evangeline Downs. The race gained even more prominence when a Filly Division was created to compliment its male counterpart division. The “Shine” annually attracts more than 100 nominees.

A reinvigorated turf course, a host of new promotions, and its ability to attract large field sizes has yielded a 9% increase in the on track handle. “We have definitely attracted a new fan base,” said Steve Darbonne, director of racing operations. “We are seeing families and friends coming out more often. Friday and Saturday nights are huge for us.”

The racing operation host nightly promotions and has reconnected to its Cajun roots. “Fans tell us they are having a lot of fun at the track,” said Darbonne. “We have lots in store for Saturday night for the futurity stakes event.”

Admission and parking is free,” said Darbonne. “Lots of great food and beverage specials are available nightly on the patio and our Clubhouse buffet pricing on Friday and Saturday night are a good value. We have lots of kid-friendly options as well.”
