2009 Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana Annual Yearling
Slated for September 28 & 29
Louisiana Thoroughbred Yearling Sale Expanded to Two Days Due To Overwhelming Number Of Consignments

(New Orleans, La.) – September 16, 2009 – Due to overwhelming support for its annual yearling sale, the Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana extended the event to a two-day sale.

The Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana Annual Yearling Sale is set September 28, 2009 and September 29, 2009. The sale will be held at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center in West Monroe, Louisiana. Two hundred twenty one yearlings will be sold on the Monday the 28th with two hundred twenty to follow on Tuesday the 29th. Last year the sales company reported 62% increase in overall revenue and a 46% average price increase over the 2007 sale. "We believe that the success of last year's sale and our breeders' incentive program contributed to the large number of yearlings being entered in our sale," said Tom Early, CEO for the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association and sales coordinator for the Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana.

“The Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana is in existence to provide the breeders of Louisiana a viable and professionally operated venue to sell the horses they breed,” said Early. “We are seeing a good response from prospective buyers already. We are hopeful that this will translate into good sales prices for our breeders.”

Only horses sold in this sale are eligible for the Bayou State Bonus. Any accredited Louisiana bred yearling that passes through the sales ring this year and goes on to win a series of races will receive a bonus of $100,000 in earnings. The races for fillies are the Louisiana Champions Day Lassie, the Crescent City Oaks and the Elge Rasberry. The races for the colts and geldings are the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile, the Crescent City Derby and the A.L. Erwin. The purses for the Elge Rasberry and A.L. “Red” Erwin have been set at $150,000 for sales graduates.

Takin' The Bullet, a 2006 colt that was sold in the Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana Annual Mixed Sale 2007, won the 2009 A.L. “Red” Erwin for owner, Heiligbrodt Racing Stable on September 5, 2009 at Louisiana Downs. They bought the colt for $23,000 in 2007. Takin’ The Bullet was bred by Southern Equine, LLC. The winner’s share of the purse was $90,000.

The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association incentive program is one of the richest in the country. Three races per day are offered for accredited Louisiana breds at each track each day in Louisiana. 22% Breeders' Awards are paid to accredited Louisiana breds finishing first, second or third in any race in Louisiana. 22% Breeders' Awards are paid to accredited Louisiana breds finishing first, second or third in any stakes race outside of Louisiana.
