Louisiana Bred Colt and Female Jockey Aim For the History Books In Saturday’s Kentucky Derby

(New Orleans, La.) – Louisiana bred three year old Vicar’s In Trouble is headed for the starting gate at this Saturday’s 140th running of the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Kentucky. Louisiana horsemen are hoping that the colt makes history by being the first Louisiana bred to win the Derby.

Vicar's in Trouble is the first Louisiana-bred to run in the Derby since Zarb's Magic competed in 1996 and just the third in the almost 50 years since states where the horses were bred were included in past performance charts.

“Having a horse like Vicar’s In Trouble as a Derby contender gives our breeding program a real boost,” said Jake Delhomme, president of the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association. “It would validate our incentive program and ensure that it continues into the future. The program was created for just this reason – to produce top contenders at the best races in the world. It also increases the value of our horses and that makes the horse breeding business more viable.”

Vicar In Trouble’s jockey, Rosie Napravnik, would make history of her own in becoming the first female jockey to win the Kentucky Derby. She is the regular rider of Vicar’s in Trouble, a front-runner who was never threatened in taking the $1 million Louisiana Derby.

Bred by Spendthrift Farm LLC, trained by Mike Maker and owned by Eclipse Award winners Ken and Sarah Ramsey, Vicar’s in Trouble sold for $8,000 at Equine Sales Company’s inaugural yearling auction and since then has banked $788,900 in just five starts. In addition to winning the prestigious Louisiana Derby, the colt also won the $200,000 Lecomte Stakes by nearly seven lengths and finished third in the $400,000 Risen Star Stakes. Assuming Vicar’s in Trouble starts in the Kentucky Derby, he will become just the third Louisiana-bred to ever make the race.

Vicar’s in Trouble was consigned as a yearling by Mark Toothaker, agent, and purchased by Clyde Taylor. The colt by Into Mischief sold again for $80,000 as a 2-year-old.

Vicar’s In Trouble is by the same sire as Goldencents and Vyjack, who both made plenty of noise on the 2013 to the Kentucky Derby.

All three are sons of the up-and-coming young sire Into Mischief, a noted juvenile of 2007 who scored his signature win in the CashCall Futurity. During a three-year-old campaign limited by injury, he raced only at seven furlongs, winning a minor stakes at Santa Anita and placing in both the San Vicente and Malibu.

Vicar's in Trouble is out of Vibrant, a five-time winner at sprint distances. She has produced two minor winners prior to Vicar's in Trouble. Vibrant is by Vicar, who turned the Fountain of Youth/Florida Derby double in 1999. After winding up near the rear in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, he eventually reverted to one-turn events. Vibrant is a half-sister to Grade 3-winning sprinter True Direction, hero of the 2002 Fall Highweight Handicap.

Trainer Mike Maker, the son of a trainer, grew up in the suburbs of Detroit attending races at Hazel Park and Detroit Race Course. At the young age of 13, Maker was already involved in the Thoroughbred industry as a horse owner. He was an assistant for Hall of Fame trainer D Wayne Lukas and worked with Kentucky Derby winner Charismatic. Maker opened his own stable in 2003 and has trained top horses including: Eclipse Award winner, Hansen, Derby Kitten and Stately Victor.

Ken and Sarah Ramsey are natives of Artemus, Kentucky and are longtime horse lovers. Ken’s first glimpse of the Twin Spires came at age 5 when his family took a trip to Louisville and since that day he has always wanted to win the Kentucky Derby. The Ramsey’s have won numerous owners titles at racetracks across the country and have owned such stakes winners as Kitten’s Joy, Roses in May, Precious Kitten, and Pleasant Prince.

(Opelousas, La.) - The 2013 Evangeline Downs Thoroughbred-racing season begins Wednesday, April 17. The 84-day meet runs through September 7, 2013.

This will be the first racing season for Evangeline under the ownership of Boyd Gaming, which purchased the track and casino late last year. Boyd Gaming also owns Delta Downs Racetrack Casino Hotel in Vinton, La.

As a part of the season opening activities, Hall of Fame jockey, Chris McCarron, and Dave Johnson, nationally known track announcer, will be on hand to meet horse racing fans on Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20. They will also broadcast two live radio shows from Evangeline Downs on Saturday, April 20.

Chris McCarron, elected into horse racing's Hall of Fame in 1989, had one of racing's most successful careers, highlighted by two Kentucky Derby wins and five Breeders' Cup Classic wins. He has won every major horse race the sport has to offer. He was the first jockey to win more than 1,000 races in a two-year period.

For more than 40 years, Dave Johnson has been a famous personality in the Thoroughbred and Standardbred horseracing industry. Dave was the Voice of the Triple Crown for ABC Sports. He has called all of the sport's biggest races. Dave is best known for his signature race call "And Down The Stretch They Come!"

On Saturday, April 20, Dave Johnson and his co-host, award-winning writer Bill Finley, will host two Sirius XM shows live from Evangeline Downs Racetrack. They will first broadcast their weekly, "Down The Stretch" show from 8am - 11am CST.

From 4pm-5pm CST, they will broadcast a special "Kentucky Derby Preview Show" with special guest, Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron.

Both shows will air on Sirius channel 93 and XM channel 209.

In addition to the excitement around these racing legends, this year Evangeline Downs is hosting events and promotions all season long in their Clubhouse, paddock area and trackside, said Steve Darbonne, Director of Racing Operations. All the action kicks off April 17 and continues through September 7 with racing Wednesdays through Saturdays; first post time of the night is at 5:40pm.

A total of 23 events worth 1.7 million dollars make up this year's stakes schedule.

As usual, Louisiana Legends Night, slated for July 6, will be one of the highlights of the meet. The Legends card will feature a total of eight races restricted to Louisiana-breds worth a total of $775,000.

Also in July are two divisions of the rich D.S. "Shine" Young Futurity. Trials for the futurity will be run on July 3 and July 4, with the finals, estimated to be worth $120,000 each, set for July 27.

The meet's richest event will once again be the Evangeline Mile. The Mile is for 3-year-olds and up and will be contested on August 10.

The Opelousas, Louisiana-based facility has evolved to the entertainment destination that was the vision when the facility was built in 2003 as a casino, live horse racing facility, and simulcast off-track betting facility. Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino features a state-of-the-art facility with a one-mile oval, 7/8-mile turf course, a 1 1/8-mile chute and nearly 1,000 stalls on the backside. The entire property consists of nearly 750 acres.

The live action of racing has deep roots in the Cajun culture along with a party atmosphere for people of all ages. Louisiana has the most successful racing and breeding incentive program in North America, said Darbonne. We believe our racing program is one of the best entertainment values and something the whole family can enjoy.

Louisiana Bred!

This weekend we're rolling out a new web site for the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association. It only took four months to completely redesign and bring the current website up to today's standards. No more drop down menus (they had drop down and 'drop' up). There are pictures, videos, statistics and an easy client content management system.

Thanks to our technology partners, CBM Technology, the site should be flawless.

Not bad for a couple of Acadiana/Louisiana companies.

Calzone's Thoroughbred Race Horse Breeders Bucks National Trend On A Day When The Economy Tanked!

Total Receipts Soar at Louisiana Yearling Sale
by Jeff Apel

The Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana yearling sale overcame the slumping economy to post double-digit increases in gross receipts and average, reversing a downward trend experienced in other recent yearling auctions.

The one-day sale concluded Monday with 171 of 258 Louisiana-bred yearlings offered selling for total receipts of $2,086,300, a 63.6% increase compared with last year’s sale, when 149 of 246 horses offered sold for $1,275,300. This year’s average price of $12,201 increased 42.6% compared with last year’s $8,559 average. Monday’s median price was $6,000. No comparable figure was available from last year’s sale. Buy-backs increased from 74 last year to 87 on Monday.

The double-digit increases in total receipts and average price prompted Tom Early, the sale director and secretary/treasurer of the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association, to call the sale “the best we’ve had in Louisiana for yearlings.” He credited lucrative purses offered at Louisiana tracks for the big increases, which came on the heels of steep declines at the Keeneland September yearling sale.

“We attracted the buyers,” Early said. “We have a quality product that can earn a lot of money.”

Early said increased advertising also helped to bolster the sale. “We worked this sale,” Early said. “We did a whole lot more advertising for it. No one in the country could say they didn’t know we had a sale.

“We also, for the first time, had a [public relations] guy that went around to the various sales talking to various buyers and consignors.”

Fillies by Lemon Drop Kid and Leestown each sold for $65,000 to top the sale. Tony Richey, agent for Oak Leaf T.C., purchased the Lemon Drop Kid filly, who is out of the winning Majestic Light mare Royal Flex. Consigned by Red River Farm, agent, the bay filly is a half sister to stakes-placed winners Flexible Princess and Our Colors and is from the female family of Grade 1 winners and sires General Assembly and Chief Honcho, multiple graded stakes winner and sire American Chance, and multiple Grade 3 winner Expressive Dance. Lee Young Farm purchased the Leestown filly, who is out of the unplaced With Approval mare Bussalma. A half sister to Caribean Sea, a dual champion imported older horse and dual champion stayer in the Dominican Republic and multiple stakes winner We’ll See Ya, the Leestown filly was consigned by Red River Farm, agent for breeders Jay Adcock and Neal McFadden.
